Bondi’s Follow Up Flash Mob
I was just hanging around on Bondi Beach with some friends last Saturday when someone started pumping out B-52’s ‘Love Shack’. The next thing I knew some sunbathers were knocking out a dance routine across the beach. Yes it was another great Flash Mob on Bondi Beach. Organised by international DJ Dan Murphy and lead by the sumptuous drag queen Joyce Maynge was Sydney’s first gay Flash Mob.
Non-dancing sunbathers swarmed around with cameras and video recorders at the ready. Some of my friends, who had previously been Flash Mob virgins said it made their whole day and comments on YouTube included ‘Fantastic! Makes me proud to be a Sydney gay!’ and ‘What a great country we live in.’
It started out with a drag queen and three men in tight swimming trunks and gradually more and more or the beach raised itself from the sand to join in the performance. Even some kids decked out in sun hats and pink star sunglasses were throwing some shapes.
But was there any meaning behind the madness? As you’ll see at the end of the clip it was advertising The Mardi Gras with Rock Your Box events and in the words of Kylie Minogue ‘Your Disco Needs You!’ These stunts are becoming one of the best marketing techniques around as viewers love them and videos are posted all over YouTube, MySpace, Twitter and Facebook just hours after the stunt. To add to its success Kylie Minogue herself commented on Twitter saying ‘****LOVED seeing this …well donepeeps***!!!’ and then she requested ‘Dear Bondi-Flash-Mob…..next time can you start or finish with SLOW???!!!’ A gay Flash Mob had to be the next step in a city with such a vibrant gay scene as Sydney.
